Barnavave Loop


Moderate three hour walk taling in the scenic Meave's Gap and Lost Famine village

Starting in Carlingford:Walk past Taaffe's Castle to village square, up Savages's Hill (to the right of Savage's Butchers)Where tarmac ends, head up walled green lane. Halfway up the hill, trach passes through gate on left and continues upward as green path. Turn right upTán Waywhen you will meet it (yelow walking man marker). At pass, "Slieve Foye" marker points right. in 50mTáin Waymarker points ahead, take a left here up fence towards Barnavave. Keep fence , then the wall on your right, steeply down Medbh's Gap. 50m below left-rightr dogleg, right through wall ( court tomb lies uphill ib angle of wall). Path beats diagonally down hill to deserted village.  Follow wall to right, then left by houses, down walled lane. In 50m, right between the walls: in 100m right through the wall: descend: left along the lane. in 1/4 mile, straight on( dont go right) at fork; continue1/4 mile to tarmac road, left to Carlingford.

 

Direction : The M1 is the motorway connecting the cities of Dublin and Belfast. Leave the M1 at Junction 18 – and join the R173 in the direction of Ballymascanlan and Carlingford.After 15km watch as the R173 turns (signposted Carlingford) – a further 3km takes you to the village. The Tourist Office is in the main car park on your left.
